Leah Sanchez - Medical Student, ATSU - Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine

Leah Sanchez is a second-year medical student at A.T. Still University - Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. She was born and raised in Columbia, Missouri and attended the University of Missouri-Columbia for undergrad. She discovered her passion for working with those with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities when she was a freshman in high school when she began coaching her first Special Olympics volleyball team. She is currently interested in specializing in pediatrics with an emphasis in Developmental and Behavioral Disabilities. Leah has been very involved with the IDD Elective at ATSU and is currently the Co-President of the Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Club (IDD Club). She has loved getting to know the Kirksville IDD Community over the past two years and is excited to see how th eprogram grows in the upcoming years!
Presentation Description - Self-advocacy in the Medical Setting:
Join ATSU Medical Students as they explain some common things that patients with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities may encounter at a doctor's visit. They will demonstrate the difference between good and bad encounters, as well as, demonstrating some of the more common medical equipment that might be used during an appointment. Additionally, they will present various ways patients with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities can advocate for themselves and be aware of how they should be treated and respected by their doctor.
